Do I or Don’t I Exercise When I am Sick
I often get asked, ‘if I am sick do I or don’t I exercise’? It’s not always and easy answer. First and foremost, you need to listen to your body.
- If you are tired and feel worn out or achy then listen to your body and rest.
- The general rule is if your symptoms are neck up, then try to exercise at a lower intensity and less time. Sometimes it even helps.
- If your symptoms are below your neck, including congestion and/or coughing it is suggested you don’t exercise until that clears up. Of course, if you have a fever do not exercise.
- If you have a Stomach bug, you’ll usually want to wait 24-48 hours after you are keeping food in before you exercise. Make sure you drink plenty of water to rehydrate your body.
When you do start back to exercise again, begin with lower intensity and less time. Slowly ease your way back into increasing the intensity and time. If you are not sure about whether you are ready to return to exercise after being sick, please check with your doctor.
How to reduce your chances of getting sick and spreading your germs:
- Stay home until you are feeling better.
- Wash your hands often for at least 20 seconds with soap and water.
- Try to avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
- Stay away from sick people if possible.
- If you have sick family members try not to kiss, hug or touch their hands while they are sick.
- When you cough or sneeze do it into a tissue or your upper shirt sleeve to cover your mouth and nose.
- Wash your hands after you sneeze, cough or blow your nose.
- Stay hydrated
